DEAF HOPE

DeafHope is a non-profit enterprise in Oakland, California providing social and emotional support services and housing for abused deaf women and their children. In 2008 HBHM Architects (Hansel Bauman + Hope Mitnick) worked closely with DeafHope to develop a concept design for the Door To Hope complex—a 60,000 GSF transitional housing community and social services center constructed around protected outdoor gardens.

The Project’s double courtyard scheme was the outcome of DeafHope user input over two days of workshops led by HBHM Architects. The concept surrounds one courtyard with spaces for social services and job-training for residents and daytime users.  Housing units and communal spaces surround a second, private courtyard of kitchen gardens for residents.
